From Aging Athlete to Ageless Athlete

For years, I have considered myself an "aging athlete." It is true - I was an athlete aging into my 40s and mid-50s. It was about a 5-year process before I started using the word "ageless" instead of "aging." I would not have been able even to consider that mindset change if it had not been for me to start flexibility and mobility training, which I now call "Mobility Day."

One day, at 45, I started on a run, and everything hurt - well - everything from the waist down. I thought my running days were done. My hips were so tight it made my legs, knees, and feet not feel right. After running a few minutes, I decided to walk back to the gym, ride the bike, and stretch.  Fast forward a few weeks of 5 minutes of biking / 5 minutes of stretching, foam rolling, and massage tooling, and my Mobility Day was born. It is now a staple in my fitness schedule at least 1-2 times a week. It looks like this:

Repeat 5 times
Nonimpact Cardio 5 minutes (bike, row, elliptical, swim)
Stretch, foam roll, or massage 5 minutes

Some specifics that help each set:
- start with feet, ankles, shins, and calves for set 1
- work knees to hips for set 2
- work hips and lower back for set 3
- work the entire torso for set 4
- work shoulders/arm and anything else that needs it for set 5
