I Knew I Did Not Like the Word "Resolution" as a Goal Replacement

There is a Reason - Check It Out

For over 250 years, the word "resolution" entered our vocabulary as a word that has replaced the word "goal", but only for the month of January. This never set well with me as a coach and for my own personal and professional goals throughout my life. First, any day is a good DAY ONE to start toward a new goal.

 

You do not need it to be the beginning of a year, month, or week, but starting with a new time block makes sense to many, so let's think about a few options:

The word evolved from "resolute" to resolve problems to eventually mean make a decision and stick to it. However, if you look deeper and travel down the rabbit hole with me to it's Latin roots, you may get a new idea with this year's New Year Resolution.

The Latin roots of resolution comes from resolutionem which means to reduce to simpler forms, loosen, untie, or set free. (credit - Uselessetymology.com).

 

Consider this as a New Year Resolution: Decrease the useless activities you do. Make your day easier with less scheduling conflicts, loosen ties that are holding you back from being a better version of yourself. Set yourself free and make your life more efficient. Getting rid of bad habits is better than starting a bunch of new "resolutions" that are forgotten by February of this year. 

Regardless, if you want to make a change that will work, make it work through consistency and simplicity. Don't stop smoking, drinking, going on a diet, and add exercise to your life all in the same week. Pick one for January. One for February. and by March of this year, you could be well on your way to changing your life. 

Life is meant to be simple, but we have a way of making things way to difficult, conflicting, and hectic for no real good reason. Even at it's simplest forms, life is still hard and requires struggle to make it work for you and those you have in your life so I am not suggesting "as easy route", just one that may actually be more useful. 

It took me over 10 years to realize the reason why I did not like writing New Year's Resolution articles or even the word "resolution". It's current form fails to be useful after a few weeks as depicted in the many attempts of the New Year - New You Fitness Article (click below):

As you can see from the numerous attempts to write something motivational and inspiring for a New Year's article, I always had a difficult time with the word resolution. I finally realized why.
