Warrior to Civilian: The Field Manual for the Hero's Journey

Stew smith

The Countdown Begins: 48 Months to Transform Your Military Experience into Civilian Success.

Transitioning from military to civilian life is often rushed by the military member only to feel less prepared for the significant life change. If you are a military member planning to get out in the next 1-2 years, you must equip yourself with the right tools and strategies to ensure a smooth transition. Think of the same way you transitioned into the military - get your stuff together and take time for this critical decision. The good news is that you can confidently and clearly navigate this journey with proactive planning and awareness.

Plot your course for this transition journey.

First, prepare for your transition 24 to 48 months before leaving the service. This timeframe allows you to gradually acclimate to civilian life rather than facing a sudden shift. Begin by exploring your interests, skills, and values outside the military context. Ask yourself: What are your passions? What kind of work brings you fulfillment? This self-reflection is critical for finding a new purpose post-service, whether pursuing education, a new career, or engaging in community service.

Understanding civilian life is essential as well. The transition may come with a culture shock – civilian environments often differ significantly from military ones. Engage with civilian organizations, attend workshops, and connect with veterans who have successfully transitioned. These interactions will not only provide insights but can also dispel fears and misconceptions about civilian life. There are groups available in this realm now, but less than half of the veterans take advantage of this assistance. See resource for military transition.

See the podcast with the authors about the successful transition projects.

Supporting your spouse during this period is equally important. This journey affects both of you, and open communication is key. Please share your thoughts and feelings about the transition and involve them in your planning. Please encourage them to pursue their interests and find support networks tailored to military families. This partnership will help both of you navigate the emotional landscape of transitioning together.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of resources available to you. The military community has programs to assist veterans in transitioning to civilian life. Check out the SkillsBridge Program a year before you decide to exit military service. Seek out mentorship programs, job fairs, and counseling services. They are there to help you refine your resume, prepare for interviews, and adjust to civilian workplace norms.

The Honor Foundation is a program to help members of SOF communities make the military-to-civilian transition.

As you approach this new chapter, remember that transitioning is a journey, not a destination. By taking proactive steps now and utilizing the support around you, you can find fulfillment and purpose in your civilian life. Embrace this opportunity for growth and transformation, and take the helm of your future. Your best days are ahead of you.
